I took a chunk of rhubarb from my dad's plant several years ago and just stuck it in the ground up by the house and it grew. I always thought it was fairly hardy. The soil around the house is sandy and well drained. Mine seems to thrive on neglect, because the only time I pay attention to it is in the spring when I'm cutting it for strawberry rhubarb pie or rhubarb crisp.
