Many herbs will grow well in the shade ( four hours or less of sun per day). Here are some herbs that tolerate partial shade: angelica, catnip, chervil, dill fennel, sweet woodruff, lemon balm, tarragon, lovage, parsley, pennyroyal, and pineapple sage. Mint can survive anywhere, including shady spots. Chives will grow well in the shade, but will not produce many flowers.
Other plants that do really well in the shade include, Impatiens, Columbine, Fuchsia, Wax Begonias, Hostas, and Ferns. Hostas also called Plantain Lillies come in several different colors from blue to yellow leaves, with a tall spike of flowers in late summer. Ferns also make excellent plants for the deep shade, with their delicate leaves.
