Getting ready for the fall gardening season makes quite a few people giddy with excitement. Trying to decide what to plant, where to put in the new vegetable bed, and how to get the soil ready for the seeds and transplants. With fall gardening you get to plant flowers that bloom in shades of yellow, orange, and red, and vegetables and herbs that like a little bit of cooler weather. Here are my 10 Must Haves for Fall Gardening.
Time to clean up the garden, rake up the leaves and till the soil to at least 12 inches if you plan on having any root crops. This tiller is a must have as it helps you to till in organic amendments quickly and easily.

Speaking of organic amendments, make sure to add earthworm castings, bone and blood meal to the soil. Till it or rake it in well. Water it really well, then till it again with another mix of the soil amendments.

For smaller spaces, like with containers or hanging baskets, use a hand tool set to mix the soil to get it ready for its fall blooms.

Unless you want to hand water your garden everyday, invest in a good irrigation system. For my hanging baskets and containers especially, get a kit that will make sure they stay evenly moist and won’t dry out.

If you don’t put in an irrigation system, make sure you grab a wand that has a lot of settings. The Shower Setting is the best as it doesn’t drown out seeds and is gently on transplants too.

One of the easiest ways to grow potatoes is in a planter bag. Those that live in warmer climates are able to grow potatoes throughout the winter months. Bonus!

The most used tool in my garden is hands down my hoe. I use this to weed, till up the soil in between plants and to rake in amendments every month.

At the end of the growing season when you are harvesting the seeds, you need a great place to store them. This might be for beads, but I love it for seem storage! Just remember to mark down the variety, date harvested and specific characteristics of the plant in a journal.
